When should I book my Christmas pet sitter?

Book 8-10 weeks in advance for Christmas week care. That means early-to-mid October for Christmas 2026. Professional pet sitters typically fill their holiday schedules by late November, with Christmas Eve through Boxing Day booking out first. The earlier you book, the better your choice of carers and visit times. For general summer holidays, 4-6 weeks ahead is usually sufficient, but Christmas is our absolute busiest period of the year.

No stress! This happens all the time during the holiday season. Simply contact us with your new arrival time, and we’ll continue care until you’re safely home. We charge our standard daily rate for any additional days needed. We’d much rather you travel safely and enjoy your time away than rush home worried about your pets. They’ll be perfectly happy continuing their care routine with us.
Yes! We know pets don’t understand public holidays, and they still need their breakfast on Christmas morning. We provide full service on all public holidays including Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day. These dates do include a small holiday surcharge (detailed in our pricing section) to recognise that our carers are working when they could be with their own families.
Absolutely! Many of our clients have multi-pet households – cats who hate each other, dogs and cats with completely different routines, rabbits who need garden time – we’ve seen it all. We create individual care plans for each of your pets and make sure everyone gets the attention they need. Whether it’s feeding pets separately, managing different medication schedules, or respecting which cat gets which favourite sleeping spot, we adapt to your household’s unique dynamics.
We’re experienced in recognising signs of illness or distress, and we’ll contact you immediately if we notice anything concerning. We coordinate directly with your nominated veterinarian and can transport your pet for emergency care if needed. All emergency veterinary expenses are your responsibility, but we handle the logistics and stay with your pet throughout treatment. We’ll keep you updated every step of the way, no matter what timezone you’re in.
Home security is part of our service. Our arrival times naturally vary slightly to avoid obvious patterns, we manage your lights and curtains to maintain a lived-in appearance, collect mail and packages so nothing accumulates at your door, and check window and door locks. Many of our clients say they feel safer travelling during Christmas knowing their home is being monitored.
Are there any restrictions or surcharges during busy periods?

Yes, to ensure reliable care for all pets during our busiest times, we have some scheduling adjustments. A $10 surcharge applies on all New Zealand public holidays (Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, etc.) to recognise that our team is working when they’d normally be with their families.

During peak periods like Christmas week and New Year’s week, visit times are limited to 30 minutes and scheduled by geographic route rather than specific times. This route-based system ensures every pet receives timely, consistent care without delays or missed visits. You’ll receive GPS tracking as always, so you’ll know exactly when we arrive!

For regular weeks throughout the year, we’re happy to accommodate specific time requests whenever possible.

Holiday pet sitting during Christmas and summer often involves longer booking periods (1-3 weeks rather than 2-3 days), more complex home care tasks (Christmas tree watering, more extensive mail collection, managing holiday deliveries), and occasionally caring for pets who are more stressed due to pre-holiday chaos. We also work around public holidays when other services might be closed. Otherwise, your pets receive the same excellent care year-round – we just might send you photos of them with a Santa hat!

These pets often need daily care even more than cats and dogs, and they definitely can’t go to boarding facilities. We’re experienced with the specific needs of small animals including temperature management, fresh food requirements, and maintaining social bonds in bonded pairs or groups.
The holiday period can be extra stressful for anxious pets – there’s often pre-trip chaos, disrupted routines, and sometimes Christmas decorations that change their environment. We use gentle, patient approaches, respect your pet’s need for space, maintain their normal routines as closely as possible, and provide extra companionship time. For very anxious pets, we recommend our overnight care option so they never have to sleep alone. We can also coordinate with your vet about calming aids if needed.
